What to Look For In A Behaviour Consultant

Educational Background:

  • Look for a consultant with a background in psychology, behaviour analysis, or a related field (such as social work)

    Certification:

    • Ask the BC for his or her certification(s)

      • Certifications can be in ABA (Applied Behaviour Analysis), or other specific certification such as the Early Denver Start Model (EDSM)

    Experience:

    • What is the BC's personal and working experience with individuals of developmental disabilities.

      • Is it only Autism? Is he or she experienced with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) or PDA (Pathelogical Demand Avoidance). Well PDA is not a formal diagnosis in Canada, some traits and behaviours have been recognized by the individuals other professionals. Is the BC experienced in a range of behaviours?

    • Outside of the development disability could be behavioural health concerns and conditions.

      • Does the individual have a physical impairment and uses a wheel chair, non-verbal and uses a communication device?

Skills:

  • Does the BC have strong-problem solving skills, communication, empathy skills and skills that are important to you?

    Work Environment:

    • Will the BC attend Individual Education Plan (IEP) meetings at the school? Does the BC prefer on-line meetings or in-person? Would this be at your home or in an office?

      Values:

      • What does the individual stand for? What are the Values, Vision Statement and Mission Statement of the Organization?

Other Questions:

What behaviour or skill do you want targeted? Is this the BC's expertise?

What ages do you work with?

My main client ages are between 6-18 year olds. I am willing to work with adults.

What is your experience and qualifications?

I started family life with a non-verbal autistic challenging boy who is now in high-school sucessfully. I graduated from Douglas College with a Certifiate in Behaviour Intervention and a Certificate in Disability and Applied Behaviour Analysis. I am currently enrolled at Thompson River University in an Open Learning program to purse further education interests.

How do you accept payment?

I bill through the Autism Funding Unit using the family's autism funding. A family signs the Request To Pay (RTP) form listing me as a service provider as a behaviour consultant.

I do accept private pay for those who do not have autism funding.
